Radiation protection

In a nuclear environment, ionising radiation turns every door opening into a safety issue.

Designing a radiation protection door means interposing between the source and personnel the materials capable of absorbing or attenuating ionising radiation, according to its nature and real energy spectrum.

Baumert is CEFRI n°657E certified and conducts its interventions on nuclear sites in accordance with the ALARA principle: Exposure to ionising radiation is kept as low as reasonably achievable for the teams who install, maintain, and operate our equipment.

Radiation types and their shielding requirements

Gamma radiation
Gamma radiation is an energy photon emitted from an unstable nucleus, with no mass or charge. It can travel much further through air than alpha or beta radiation, losing on average half its energy every 152 metres. High atomic number materials such as lead or depleted uranium constitute the most effective form of shielding.

Neutron radiation
Neutrons present a particular case as their moderation requires light hydrogen-rich materials (polyethylene, water), and their absorption requires specific materials such as boron or cadmium. Neutron shielding often combines both functions in successive layers, which distinguishes it from gamma shielding.
Challenges for door design
The nature of the radiation and its intensity determine the choice of materials, the thicknesses and the shielding architecture integrated into the door. A radiation protection door is not simply reinforced equipment, but specifically dimensioned according to the radiological spectrum to be contained, in order to bring the dose rate on the protected face below the required thresholds. Drawing on its expertise, Baumert has developed dedicated solutions for both gamma radiation protection and neutron radiation attenuation.

Our products

At Baumert, a door is never designed to meet just one requirement. Our solutions can combine up to seven protective functions within a single door: fire resistance, blast resistance, ballistic protection, burglary resistance, radiation shielding, containment, and airtightness.

Seismic resistance forms the foundation of all our developments, enabling our products to meet the most demanding requirements of critical environments.
