Fire

Fire risk:
A major threat to critical
infrastructure.

Fire is one of the most frequent and most impactful risks in critical infrastructure. Electrical, mechanical, human or organisational in origin, it can emerge from an vast range of situations, and remains a permanent threat to sensitive installations
Flame propagation can compromise containment, render safety equipment inaccessible, and expose areas where protection is non-negotiable. On these critical sites, the fire door is not just a compliance item, but an active safety barrier.

Understanding fire risk

The fire triangle
The fire triangle rests on three essential elements: Fuel, oxidiser (generally  oxygen present in the air) and heat. Remove any one of these three elements and combustion stops. This logic underpins all fire prevention and compartmentalisation strategies on industrial sites.
Causes of fire on critical sites
The most common causes are electrical failures (such as short circuits or overloads), inappropriate storage of flammable products, malfunctioning heating and ventilation systems, human error and naturally occurring events (including lightning and extreme temperatures). On a nuclear site, each of these causes can have consequences entirely disproportionate to those of a fire in an ordinary building.

Applicable standards

REI classification

The fire resistance of a door is defined by the REI classification: R (mechanical resistance), E (sealing against flames and hot gases), I (thermal insulation). A door classified REI 60 simultaneously maintains these three properties for 60 minutes under fire conditions. Flame-stop doors (classified E only) limit flame propagation without guaranteeing thermal insulation.

EN 1634 governs the fire resistance testing of doors and partitioning. On nuclear sites, the applicable reference frameworks exceed standard EN norms and require qualification under conditions reproducing the real site environment, including under simultaneous seismic loading.

Products

At Baumert, a door is never designed to meet just one requirement. Our solutions can combine up to seven protective functions within a single door: fire resistance, blast resistance, ballistic protection, burglary resistance, radiation shielding, containment, and airtightness.

Seismic resistance forms the foundation of all our developments, enabling our products to meet the most demanding requirements of critical environments.
